Unlocking Your Golf Potential with Manual Therapy: A Personal Journey to Better Performance

Blog written by Ben

As an avid social golfer, I’ve not only embraced the challenges and beauty of golf but also encountered my fair share of setbacks due to injuries. From minor strains to more persistent injuries, my journey on the green has been a testament to both the vulnerabilities and resilience of a golfer’s body. It was through these personal experiences that I discovered the transformative power of manual therapy in golf performance and injury prevention.

Drawing from my background in manual therapy, I’ve navigated through the initial hurdles of injuries by applying a combination of electro dry needling and soft tissue massage. These techniques proved to be pivotal in addressing the root causes of my discomfort, offering me not just relief but a pathway to recovery. Furthermore, I’ve integrated strength training and mobility drills into my routine, optimising my physical state and enhancing my swing efficiency dramatically.

How can manual therapy enhance golf performance?

The essence of manual therapy lies in its holistic approach to movement and functionality. For golfers, the sport’s repetitive nature can often lead to overuse injuries, manifesting as pain and limitations in crucial areas such as:

  • Lower back
  • Shoulders
  • Hips
  • Neck

Manual therapy, encompassing soft tissue mobilisation, joint mobilisation, dry needling, and stretching, emerges as a cornerstone for not only alleviating these ailments but also for elevating one’s game.

Many golfers, perhaps even you, might be familiar with the common barriers to optimal performance:

  • Hip stiffness
  • Lower back spasms
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder tension
  • Elbow ache

These are not mere discomforts but significant obstacles that can hinder your swing, your performance, and your enjoyment of the game. Manual therapy offers a strategic intervention, targeting these issues to improve movement patterns, enhance body mechanics, and ultimately, reduce the risk of future injuries.

It’s crucial that such interventions are carried out by qualified health professionals, such as myotherapists, who can assess individual needs and craft personalised treatment plans. These plans not only aim to address immediate concerns but also to empower golfers with the tools and knowledge to maintain their physical well-being and continue improving their game.

Why settle for a mediocre swing when you can aspire to swing like the pros, like Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy?

Integrating manual therapy into your training regimen could be the game-changer you need, minimising pain on the course and maximising your performance. It’s about playing the game you love, without reservations, and pushing the boundaries of what you can achieve on the golf course.

In this video, you can observe the improvements in my swing posture and mechanics before and after undergoing manual therapy and mobility drills. Initially, my left knee tended to collapse inward due to poor left hip internal rotation and stiffness in the right glutes, which hindered external rotation. This imbalance placed a significant amount of stress on my back as it compensated for the tight hips.

In contrast, the second video shows that the left knee no longer collapses as much, thanks to improved mobility in the left hip (internal rotation) and better external rotation in the right hip. These adjustments allowed my trunk and back to achieve optimal rotation, easing my back and enabling a more efficient and powerful swing mechanic.

Achieving these results required several sessions of manual therapy to relieve stiffness in the hip flexors and glutes, combined with targeted mobility exercises. These interventions helped enhance hip rotation, leading to a more effective swing pattern.
