Myotherapy

What is Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is a specialised form of physical therapy that centers on the assessment, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.

Its primary concern is with the health of muscles, tendons, and fascia—the connective tissues that envelop and interconnect muscles. Myotherapy is rooted in a deep understanding of the muscular system and its influence on the body’s overall function and well-being.

  • Myotherapy specialises in treating musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, focusing on muscles, tendons, and fascia.
  • Using a combination of traditional hands on techniques as well as advanced electronic therapies to target myofascial trigger points, relieving pain and muscle tension, and promoting healing.
  • Prescribes stretching and corrective exercises to improve flexibility, enhance range of motion, and prevent injuries, tailored to individual needs.

Conditions we have successfully treated:

  • Neck Pain: Including tension headaches and whiplash.
  • Shoulder Pain: Such as rotator cuff injuries, frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), and shoulder impingement syndrome.
  • Upper Back Pain: Including thoracic outlet syndrome and postural issues.
  • Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): A condition that causes pain around the outside of the elbow, often due to overuse.
  • Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): Similar to tennis elbow but affects the inside of the elbow.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A condition that causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm.
  • Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI): Caused by repetitive motion or overuse of certain muscle groups.
  • Tendinitis: Inflammation of a tendon, which can occur in various parts of the upper body, including the biceps and wrist.
  • Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that cushion bones, tendons, and muscles near joints. This can occur in areas like the shoulder.
  • Muscle Strains: Such as those affecting the upper back, neck, or shoulder muscles.
  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome: Chronic pain disorder caused by sensitivity and tightness in your myofascial tissues.

What can I expect from my first Myotherapy consultation?

In an Initial myotherapy consultation you would likely to expect a full postural analysis, medical history, range of motion testing and special tests to assess muscle/ postural imbalances or injuries.

Some information you will be expected to provide to your practitioner:

  • List of current medications.
  • Any scans such as MRI or X- rays.
  • Specific goals eg. physical fitness/ sporting event, challenges, and abilities.
  • If you’re uncomfortable with certain treatment, let your Myotherapist know.
For example, if you are needle phobia we can tailor a treatment plan excluding dry needling.
